Our wonderful 30-year-old tent isn’t smelling so great. It’s offgassing something terrible. I don’t have the heart to throw it away because it has some really cool features.
One of them, a hood that’s kept taut through use of a plastic doodad, helped enormously with airflow through the tent. Plus you could look out the window in the morning, which is really cool. I’m thinking of applying this feature to our dyneema tent.
I don’t think I’ll replace the stinky parts of this tent with new material because it weighs more than 3 kg, and our new dyneema tent weighs less than 1 kg. I also don’t know how much we can depend on the solidity of the material or the waterproofness. It was a bomb-proof tent 30 years ago. It seems tents last less than 10 years!
What about our 22-year-old Hilleberg? It is made of silicon-coated Kerlon fabric. The fly has a few little holes in it … So I’m not sure I’d take it into the high mountains again.
This wonderful light from Goalzero has also given up. The flexible plastic got sticky
And then detached.
In cleaning up my aunt’s house we brought a lot of wooden and metal objects home with us.
They don’t look as sexy but have withstood the test of time.
Other old plastic things such as this bucket
are an awful color but very useful for bathing feet in cold water when it’s super hot.
